Fragmentation Reduction through Farmer-Led Land Transfer and Consolidation? Experiences of Rice Farmers in Wuhan Metropolitan Area, China

Land fragmentation has become a serious obstacle to agricultural production, and land transfer consolidation are traditionally emphasized as the two most effective solutions this quandary. To identify extent of accurately systematically, study selected number plots, average size distance between plots calculate index (LFI). Taking Wuhan metropolitan area case study, examined effectiveness farmer-led on fragmentation. The main results follows: (a) transferred contracted were not spatially adjacent, suggesting that tenants could merge consolidate both plots; (b) caused LFI increase by 2.85%, had intensified degree some extent; (c) if non-adjacent or adjacent but unmerged unconsolidated, then might decrease; (d) merged, consolidated, decreased significantly.
